How do I insert a cup and what fold should I use?
We recommend the C fold if you are having a hard time getting the cup to “pop” open. The punch-down or the triangle fold are best if you have a smaller opening or experience pain with inserting tampons. The C fold is the most popular and works for most women. Learn more about cup folds on our blog.

What if I can’t reach my cup when I try to take it out?

Common menstrual disc issues and how to fix them
Menstrual discs are inserted and worn entirely differently than menstrual cups, so even if you’ve been a cup user for years, a disc may take a little getting used to.
How to get rid of menstrual cup stains
Menstrual cup discoloration is the worst! But don’t worry — we have all the insider tricks to help you get rid of the most stubborn period cup stains!
Why using a menstrual disc will change your life
Menstrual cups have taken the market by storm. They are easy to clean, reusable for up to a decade and one of the most comfortable things you’ll wear on your period. Period discs are rising in popularity because they are comfortable, easy to use, great for women with...

How to insert
Relax. Always make sure you’re relaxed and not tense, as your body will be tight and that will make insertion difficult.
Pinch. Pinch Pixie Disc to form a figure eight.
Insert. You’re going to want to position yourself so your cervix is easy to reach. This is best achieved by sitting on a toilet, one leg up on the shower ledge or in a squatting position. Use your pointer finger to insert the rim of the cup and push as far back as is comfortable. Angle the cup back and down so the rim of the cup tucks around the backside of your cervix.
Tuck. Move your finger to the front rim, and push up, tucking the rim behind your pubic bone. This will secure the Pixie Disc and catch your flow.
How to remove
Relax and pull. Relax your body, and remember Pixie Disc is the only period disc on the market with a removal pull-string! Feel around for the thin silicone string and gentle pull. You should feel the disc dislodge. If you have cut off your string, insert your finger and hook it behind the front rim of the disc
Dump and wash. Pour your menstrual fluid into the toilet, wash your cup thoroughly with Pixie Wash, and reinsert. If it’s not possible for you to wash your cup, like you’re in a public restroom or camping, you may reinsert as long as your hands are clean. We recommend not going more than 24 hours without actually washing your disc, however. This will keep bacteria, odor and staining at bay.
How to clean
Sterilize. Before and after your cycle, be sure to sterilize by either boiling your disc on the stove, in a microwave safe container with water or in the Pixie Cup Steamer
Cleanse. Be sure to wash your disc every time you remove it, prior to reinserting. Same goes for your hands! Pixie Wash is the perfect pH balanced wash that is perfect for your body and your disc.
FAQs
Our reusable disc holds 35ml of fluid or the equivalent of 3 super tampons, the same amount as our XL Pixie Cup!
How does it work?
The disc is held in place by the pubic bone, right below the cervix, directly and securely collecting your blood. It will rest at a slight diagonal angle inside the body.
How do you insert it?
1. Squeeze the middle to where it looks like a figure 8
2. Lubricate the top of the disc
3. Sit on the toilet, squat, or hike one leg up (very difficult to insert while standing)
4. Make sure your pelvic floor muscles are completely relaxed (if tense at all, it makes insertion much harder). Insert the disc with the tip pointing down towards the ground and gently glide it back as far as it will go.
5. Using a finger, tuck the rim behind the pubic bone.
Do these work for a short cervix?
Absolutely! These are ideal for those with a short cervix since they directly hug the cervix. However, you may want to trim the stem off. The stem makes these amazing for those with a high cervix but won’t be necessary for a very low cervix.
How to remove it?
This is where the stem design comes in handy! Relax your pelvic floor muscles (this is a MUST), gently pull the stem to lower the disc down to where you can easily reach it, carefully place a finger under both sides of the rim of the disc to glide it the rest of the way out, then dump the contents into the toilet. (This could take some time to completely get the hang of it.)
How to remove it without a stem?
Use a finger to find the rim, then “hook” your finger under the rim and pull down horizontally (sort of like pulling out a drawer). Try to keep the disc parallel with the floor to avoid emptying before you’re ready.
Is it self-emptying?
Yes, the Pixie Disc is self-emptying when using the bathroom because your pelvic floor muscles relax. However, this feature tends to work for some and not for others. It depends on the person.
Can I use the Pixie Disc if I have a high cervix?
Absolutely! The stem design makes this much easier since you won’t have to reach the disc cup body to remove.
Can I use the Pixie Disc if I have a tilted cervix?
Yes, the Pixie Disc can be used if you have a tilted cervix since it directly hugs the cervix. The insertion process may be a bit harder to master, but once you have it down, you will not regret it.
Can the Pixie Disc be used for mess-free period sex?
Absolutely! You will want to trim the stem off first.
HSA & FSA eligible?
Yes! The Pixie Disc is eligible for HSA or FSA.
Does the Pixie Disc use suction?
No, there is not any suction used to keep the disc in place. Unlike a menstrual cup which uses suction to seal in your vaginal canal, the Pixie Disc is held in place by your pubic bone.
Can I use a menstrual disc with an IUD?
IUD users with a low cervix can still use menstrual discs. You may even find them easier to insert and remove. Just make sure your disc stays tucked behind your pubic bone during use, and be gentle when pulling it out

What vitamins are good for PMS?
We’ve been told PMS is just part of being a woman, but there are a lot of things you can do to alleviate PMS symptoms, starting with taking a good PMS vitamin.
PMS symptoms are common, but not normal
85% of menstruating women in the US experience PMS symptoms, but PMS is not “normal.” PMS is caused by hormone imbalances and can often be improved by lifestyle changes.

How do I know when I need to replace my gel pads?
Pixie Gel Pads can be reused until they no longer stick to your body. Typically one set of gel pads should last about 8-10 uses when they are stored and cared for properly. The better they stick to your skin, the stronger the electrical current will be, and the better Pixie Relief will work. So for optimal pain relief, you will want to change the gel pads more frequently.
What are Pixie Gel ingredients?
Pixie Gel ingredients include:
- Crosslinked Acrylic Resin
- Polyhydric Alcohol
- Electrolytic Salt
- Additives (stabiliser etc.)
- Deionized Water
How many Pixie Gel Pads are in each pack?
Each replacement pack contains 20 replacement pads (10 pairs total).
How long will each Pixie Gel set last me?
This will differ for each person! Typically one set of gel pads should last about 8-10 uses when they are stored and cared for properly, so this pack of 10 sets could last for up to 100 uses!
To extend the stickiness of the Pulse Pads, ensure that your skin is clean and dry before use. This includes being free of oily substances such as lotion or shave cream.
Where do I place my Pulse Pads?
In order to have the best relief possible, the Pulse Pads need to be placed on your lower abdomen or lower back, so your Pixie Relief can target the nerves that supply the sensory fibers to the uterus.
Remove the clear liner and place the Pulse Pads on your lower abdomen or back at least 4 inches (10cm) apart. If the Pulse Pads are too close together, your Pixie Relief will not work properly.
What if the sticky gets in my pubic hair?
Don’t stress if part of the Pulse Pad touches pubic hair -- the gel is gentle and won’t pull hair out. However, try to avoid placing Pulse Pads over a large area of hair. This will prohibit a secure anchor to the skin, diminishing the strength of the current.
Do unused Pixie Gel Pads expire?
Pixie Gel Pads have a shelf life of 2 years when they're properly cared for. Make sure to store them in a cool, dry space
Can Pixie Gel Pads work with other TENS units?
These pads are best purchased if you are already using 60mm circular electrodes as they do not include the silicone pulse pads or wiring (although these items can be purchased from pixiecup.com).
