Cleaning your Pixie Menstrual Cup
How to clean your Pixie Cup is probably one of the most important things that you can learn in your menstrual cup journey… and it is the foundation for a whole lot of fears!
Many people are afraid to even try a Pixie Cup because they aren’t sure if it is actually a sanitary option, so if that’s you, don’t feel bad!
In this guide, we will walk you through all of our cleaning “musts,” as well as a few tips to help you keep your cup stain-free, odor-free, and sparkling clean!
First, let’s talk about the difference between cleaning and sanitizing.
Cleaning vs. Sanitizing
Surprisingly as it may seem, there is a huge difference between “cleaning” and “sanitizing,” but both play equally important roles in your cup care routine. While these may sound complex, they actually are simple and easy to complete in a normal, busy day!
This is the quick rinse of your cup with hot water and soap that you should do least once a day. This quickly removes bacteria and buildup before it gets settled into grooves, and is an essential step in preventing odors and stains. It is also very important because your vaginal area is a place where bad bacteria could grow if you do not keep your cup clean and fresh. You can read more on that here.
Sanitizing is the in-depth “spring cleaning” of your cup that removes all bacteria. You should be sanitizing your cup before and after each period for optimum cleanliness.

Step 1: sanitize
Your period has begun! Make sure you sanitize your cup well before you insert it to start the week.
You have two sanitization options: boiling and steaming.
Option 1: Place a pot of hot water on the stove. When it reaches a boil, remove it from heat and use a tool (not your hands) to lower your cup into the water, careful not to let it touch the bottom of sides of the pot. After a few minutes, your cup is as good as new!
Step 2: clean regularly
Whenever you empty your cup during the day or evening, give your cup a quick wash with hot water and a little natural soap or Pixie Wash. This will keep your cup smelling nice and remove any surface stains.
If you are in a public restroom, you can either use a Pixie Wipe or some toilet paper (as long as it doesn’t disintegrate all over your cup), or place it in your collapsible Sterilizing Container and give it a quick shake with some water from a small water bottle to give it a simple clean.
Step 3: you guessed it… sterilize again.
When your period is over, it’s time to sterilize your Pixie Cup again! You can either steam your cup or boil it to make sure it is completely bacteria-free!
