DIY Essential Oil blend for the menstrual cycle

We love essential oils. Not only do the smells create a wonderful, peaceful moment, but some of them are balancing and helpful for dealing with your menstrual cycle!

Today we are going to talk about which essential oils are helpful for different parts of your menstrual cycle, how to make an essential oil blend, and where you can get a blend if you don’t want to break out the DIY vibes today!

Before we get started, we just have a little cautionary advice for you. Keep in mind, essential oils can be very beneficial but they should be used as instructed. Before you use a specific oil, test a tiny amount on your forearm to make sure you do not have a reaction to the oil. Unless otherwise instructed, always dilute the oil with a carrier oil – such as coconut or avocado oil – in amounts according to the instructions on the bottle. NEVER put essential oils in your eyes. If it does get in your eyes by any chance, use milk or a carrier oil to rinse it, not water.

We LOVE our essential oils but are careful to always treat them with respect. They are very strong and can have a powerful effect on your body, which is why it’s important to use them carefully.

Here are a few of our favorite oils to use during menstruation!

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is incredible because it has so many different purposes! It is antifungal, anti-inflammatory, promotes skin healing, and is known to decrease anxiety! Plus, this essential oil has a fresh, wonderful scent. For your menstrual cycle, rub a little of this oil on your stomach to decrease inflammation during your cycle, or put a drop or two on the bottom of your feet for quick absorption. If you’re feeling stressed, open the cap and simply breathe the fragrance of the oil in. The inhalation of lavender can reduce depression and heighten relaxation.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage essential oil has a unique, earthy, grassy smell that might take some adjusting to but its effect on your entire cycle is powerful. This is the go-to oil for female hormone issues. Clary Sage is estrogen-like and a relaxant, so it naturally balances your hormones. You can rub Clary Sage on your stomach during your period for cramp relief, or you can rub it on the bottom of your feet and inside of your wrists.

Rose

Rose essential oil was known to be wonderful for the skin for thousands of years, but it has other benefits that are equally fantastic! Rose is anti-inflammatory, a relaxant, and anti-ulcer! Rose is the top choice for dealing with PMS symptoms because of its relaxing, gentle scent and healing properties.

DIY essential oil blend for PMS:

This essential oil blend includes Clary Sage to balance your hormones, Rose to ease PMS symptoms including mood swings, bloating, and headaches, and Lavender to reduce menstrual cramps and ease anxiety. If you struggle with irregular periods, add a couple drops of Peppermint as well.

To make your own essential oil blend, you’ll need a carrier oil (we recommend fractionated coconut oil) and a small glass bottle. A dark colored bottle would be best because it protects the essential oils from sunlight, and make sure it is glass – the essential oils could break down plastic.

Recipe:

  • 10 drops of Lavender
  • 10 drops of Clary Sage
  • 10 drops of Rose
  • Fractionated coconut oil or alternate carrier oil

Add the oils to an amber, glass roll-on bottle. Match the essential oil amount with the carrier oil. Gently shake the bottle to mix the oils.

It’s as simple as that! To use your blend, apply it to your wrists, inner arm, back of the neck, or bottom of the feet! If you’re having menstrual cramps, you can apply it to your stomach as well.

Recommended essential oil blend:

If you don’t have all the oils to make the blend yourself yet, Plant Therapy offers a wonderful, fragrant blend called Balance Synergy that will help you feel balanced and peaceful amid the hormonal changes of your period week. Just roll this blend on your forearm or wrists, or on the bottom of your feet for maximum absorption.

Do you use essential oils to help deal with period pain or PMS symptoms? Which ones do you use?
