Teen cup FAQs

Can I use a menstrual cup if I’m a virgin?
Yes! You can start using a menstrual cup as soon as you get your period, no matter how old you are or whether or not you’ve had sex. Read more about this on our blog or watch this video:

Can I use a cup for my first period or if I have never used tampons?

Yes! For first-time users, we recommend using some lubricant and the punch-down fold. Insert your cup while in a squatting position, as this will make it easier.

Do cups cause TSS?

While there have been a few cases of TSS associated with menstrual cup use, it is very rare. Any menstrual product used improperly or left in too long can increase the risk of TSS. Make sure to follow the instructions, keep your cup clean, and don’t leave it in longer than recommended. Learn more about menstrual cups and TSS on our blog.

How do I insert my cup?

Always sterilize your cup before use and wash your hands. We recommend using lubricant and the punch-down fold, which will create a smaller insertion point for the cup.

We recommend using your cup for the first time in a private restroom. Make sure you have enough space and time to yourself to practice inserting your cup. You may even want to practice before you get your period so that you feel more comfortable when the time comes!

First, RELAX! It will make everything else easier. With one hand, gently separate your labia. With the other hand, guide the folded Pixie Cup rim-first into your vagina. You may find it easier to squat, or stand with one foot on the edge of the bathtub. It’s up to you!

Once your cup is in a comfortable spot, slide your finger up around the rim of the cup (not the stem) to ensure that it has opened properly. If you feel any folds along the cup, gently rotate the cup to create a sealing suction.

That’s it! Your menstrual cup is now in place and is safe to wear for up to 12 hours. If you have a heavy flow, you may need to remove and empty your cup sooner to avoid leaks.

How often should you sterilize your cup?

We recommend sterilizing your cup before and after each period. If you are prone to yeast infections, then sterilizing your cup daily is recommended. You can sterilize your cup by boiling it on the stove, or by using our steamer or UV sterilizer. Learn more about sterilizing your cup on our blog

Can I swim while wearing a cup?
Yes! One of the best things about using a cup is that you can participate in all kinds of activities that might otherwise be difficult during your period, even swimming or other water sports. Learn more on our blog or watch this video:
Can I wear a cup during sports?

Yes! You can wear your cup with confidence during all kinds of sports, from gymnastics to basketball, and not worry about leaks!

What if my cup gets stuck?

At times, you may find it difficult to remove your cup. Don’t worry — the cup can’t get “lost” inside you. There is only so far the cup can travel up before it reaches your cervix, and then there’s nowhere else for it to go. If you do have a hard time reaching your cup, don’t panic. Read our blog on how to remove a stuck cup.

How do I clean the cup in public?

Our Carry Cup makes it easy to clean your cup in a public bathroom. Simply fill it up with water and bring it into the stall with you. Remove your cup, place it in the container, put the lid on, and shake. Your cup will be clean and ready to reinsert. Our Pixie Cup Wipes are also great for cleaning your cup on the go.
